A non-invasive approach to the management of cavities, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical antimicrobial liquid that can be used in some cases to treat and prevent cavities and relieve hypersensitivity. Silver Diamine Fluoride is beneficial in many ways. The procedure to apply SDF is quick, painless, and comes at a low cost. SDF has the ability to stop tooth decay and aid in preventing future decay; however, in doing so, it turns decayed areas visibly black.

Silver diamine fluoride is not always a “one time fix” for teeth. It requires repeat applications for maximum efficiency. SDF also does not restore tooth form or function, so large cavities may still require a restoration. Silver diamine fluoride also cannot be utilized in the presence of a dental infection, or deep decay into the nerve of a tooth.

This technique is a great option for young, fearful, or pre-cooperative children, special needs patients, and medically compromised children who may otherwise require sedation for traditional dental restorations.
